Iin 1987 Grant came to beautiful Golden Bay and discovered drumming.
He enjoys playing both original and traditional rhythms and
has studied the ancient rhythms of Haiti and Africa.
Grant has performed live with Jambalaya, Rhythm House and Jah Jah and
currently performs with the band, Folkfire.
In 1995, Grants love of drumming led him to make his first drum. It was a natural progression and, since then, he has made over three hundred drums for people from around the world.
Grants drumming skills have been enhanced by his intimate knowledge of the drum itself and his passion and enthusiasm for drumming has influenced many of those who now play drums made by Grant Knowles, under the name of Tribull Drums.

Tribull Drums are built to be strong.
They
respond well to being played with passion.
Yet, they are also sensitive instruments, so care should be taken at all times
to protect the skin from damage.
Your drum is not a coffee table or a seat and should be stored away from extremes
of heat and damp. The skin should be kept dry and free of oil or grease. Play
with clean hands and no sticks and keep your drum out of the rain.
Do NOT heat your drum by a fire to tune it. The instructions provided in this
brochure will show you the proper way to tune your drum and ensure a long playing
life.

Tribull Drums are individually made
hand-crafted instruments, made from exotic and recycled native timbers.
Each drum is unique, with its own tones, form and decoration. The skins come
from wild goats, which have been culled to protect
New Zealands native forests.
They respond well to being played with wild and passionate energy. Yet, they
are also sensitive instruments, so care should be taken at all times to protect
the skin from damage.
When you buy a drum from me, I want you to be fully satisfied. Therefore I provide
full
instructions for drum care and maintenance,
as well as a guarantee of quality.
I'm also available for ongoing tuition and help with maintaining your drum.
THE DRUM
The drum is one of the oldest instruments. Ancient illustrations depict drums to 2000BC. Drums were used by Shaman to call gods, and were conduits for healing and religious ceremonies. The drum is also intrinsic to festivals and celebrations all over the world. Drums were the driving force behind the percussive din that was (and is) warfare, yet drums may also accompany the most delicate serenade. Drums are altogether a powerful, expressive and versatile instrument.
A good drummer is someone who can hold a rhythm steadily, while listening sensitively to others and adapting as the music progresses. A drummer may play alone, with other drums, or with other instruments, but in every case listening carefully and playing co-operatively are paramount to an expressive performance
